Severe Weather Threat Hits Bulgaria

Sofia, November 19, 2025 — Bulgaria braces for a harsh weather onslaught today, as national meteorologists issue a Code Orange warning across multiple districts in response to expected heavy rainfall. The alert puts parts of southwestern and central Bulgaria on high alert and raises concerns over possible flooding and disruptions.

The storm is forecast to hit especially hard in Blagoevgrad, Kyustendil, Pernik, Lovech, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, and the wider Sofia district, where rainfall is expected to be most intense. At higher elevations — particularly in the Stara Planina (Balkan) mountain range — precipitation is predicted to turn into snow above 2,000 meters, complicating travel and raising avalanche risks.

In regions under a Code Yellow warning, including cities like Varna, Burgas, Pleven, and Rousse, residents are also being urged to take precautions. Authorities warn that while rain is less severe in these areas, localized flooding and slippery conditions remain possible.

Meteorologists expect daytime temperatures across much of Bulgaria to range between 12°C and 17°C, while in the south, highs may reach up to 21°C. Overnight lows are projected to lie between 5°C and 15°C, depending on the area.

In response, local governments have already started mobilizing precautionary measures. Mountain and forestry agencies are on alert for landslides, while traffic authorities are urging drivers to adapt to hazardous road conditions — especially in mountainous zones and areas prone to water accumulation.

Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel in the worst-hit districts, clear gutters and drainage systems, and secure outdoor items that could be swept away or damaged in strong winds. Meanwhile, city services in Sofia and other affected regions are coordinating round-the-clock monitoring, readying emergency response teams in case flooding or storm-related incidents escalate.

This meteorological warning comes at a sensitive moment: Bulgaria’s infrastructure is being tested not only by the weather but also by its ongoing energy and political challenges. As rain clouds gather, the country is braced for a day where nature’s force meets geopolitical pressure.
