Thousands Blockade Parliament in Largest Protest Yet Against 2026 Budget

Sofia, November 26, 2025 — Tens of thousands of Bulgarians poured into the streets of the capital tonight in one of the biggest demonstrations of recent years, surrounding the grounds of the National Assembly of Bulgaria to protest the proposed 2026 state budget. The crowd, united by opposition parties, trade unions and civil-society groups, rejected what they called a “corruption-prone and unfair” fiscal plan — demanding resignations and deep changes before any final vote.

Protesters blocked access to the parliament building, preventing lawmakers from exiting, and held up placards with slogans such as “No to shady deals” and “Stop the mafia-state.” Many voiced fear that the budget — which contains tax hikes and salary adjustments — will not improve living standards, but rather deepen inequality and permit backroom deals.

The rally, organized by the opposition coalition We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria along with trade-union backing, attracted not only political activists but also pensioners, public-sector employees and ordinary citizens alarmed at rising cost of living and perceived mismanagement.

Tensions flared at times: near the entrance to the parliamentary building, a white bus — a potent symbol from previous historic protests — appeared, fuelling memories of past major clashes. Clashes broke out later between some protesters and police when a group of provocateurs reportedly entered the crowd from among football-fan clubs.

For many in Sofia and beyond, tonight’s protest signals more than just budget disagreement. It represents growing distrust in political institutions and mounting pressure on the government to deliver transparency, accountability — or step aside.
